I am so fortunate and excited to have the opportunity to go on this bucket list study abroad trip to the United Kingdom. Over the next 2 weeks, I will be traveling with 19 other students and professors studying agriculture communications from London to Bath to Stratford-upon-Avon to Carlisle to Edinburgh and several places in between.
While I have always loved learning about the United Kingdom (especially London), this trip holds a lot of sentimental value.
Originally, my professor and advisor Dr. Arthur Leal was supposed to lead the trip along with a professor from the University of Arkansas and the University of Ohio. Unfortunately, due to a lack of interest the trip would not be possible through the University of Tennessee.
Thankfully, another UT student and I were extended the opportunity to still go on the trip with the University of Arkansas. The trip would now be led by Dr. Leal's mentor Dr. Jefferson Miller.
Though he was not going any more, Dr. Leal and I still talked about the trip a lot. He would share my excitement when I would tell him of scholarships I earned or answer any questions I had.
On April 4, 2019 Dr. Leal passed away unexpectedly.
Heartbroken and shaken, the rest of April passed by slowly and flew by at the same time.
While his loss is still felt (and will be felt for a very long time), now more than ever I was looking forward to this trip and having the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Miller and visit places that Dr. Leal visited as a student.
I am excited for what sights and memories this trip has in store and am so very thankful for this opportunity to represent the University of Tennessee and make Dr. Leal proud.
